Tree Development Strategy

The Villages, along with Landscape Architect Michael Pape, wanted to design and build a town center based around “Old Florida”. With so many residents of The Villages coming from other states around the country, they wanted to showcase a part of Florida that has been forgotten. Their vision was to landscape the town center with material that was native to Florida, while creating a mature canopy that would soften the empty site.

 Project Challenges

Prior to landscaping , there were no preexisting trees on site. Michael Pape and The Villages recognized that specimen trees needed to be brought in to soften the large buildings and attractions. The obstacle was to install character trees in locations where it looked as if the buildings were built around the trees.

UFW Solution

UFW was able to transport and install specimen magnolias and mega live oaks to Brownwood that were equal in scale to the large buildings being built. Through proper planning with the landscape architect, engineer, and general contractor, UFW was able to coordinate installation with construction so the trees were placed in unique areas on site. These unique planting sites gave an impressive message to people entering the town center as well as for people enjoying the amenities.

Urban Forestry Works is well known by our firm for growing some of the most impressive large trees available in Florida, and has supplied some of these outstanding specimens for acclaimed projects like Brownwood Town Center in The Villages, helping it sweep the 2014 FNGLA Awards. The methods they have developed for growing, preparing, and transporting these large trees are uniquely innovative and effective.
