Public Works
The focal point of USM’s campus was the entrance green and park which showcased a beautiful landscape and sprawling mature live oaks. These live oaks had been a staple feature of the campus since its founding. In February, 2013, a massive tornado ripped across the campus destroying everything in its path, including the beautiful landscape and mature live oaks. The University immediately went to work to renovate and clean up, what the tornado had destroyed. Their vision was to recreate what had been, and to beautify the entrance of the campus once again.
Project Challenges
The obstacle was to reinvent a mature canopy and landscape which would mirror the previous landscape, and do so in time for graduation. University and booster expectations had to be met. There was sentimental value in this project, and it was important to adhere to that.
UFW Solution
UFW was able to supply approved trees by the university, and do so in less than three months. It was important to USM to replace substantial trees by graduation, since the entrance had been a main stay for Alumni and Graduates to gather during every graduation. Urban Forestry Works scattered mature 20′-22′ caliper live oaks along the entrance green, and were able to successfully complete the project a week prior to graduation.
